Meet Wood Belly! This 5 piece bluegrass band got their start about 2 years ago, when Chris (mandolin), met Craig (guitar) and his bass playing girlfriend (now wife) Sheena at the RockyGrass festival in Lyons, CO. Just before this encounter, Chris was introduced to Chris Zink (dobro) who had just happened to pick some tunes with Craig and Sheena just a few weeks before. After a few small line-up changes, they added Aaron McCloskey (banjo) and previous Von Stomper bassist, Taylor Shuck, replaced Sheena (now with the Ginny Mules).

The members of Wood Belly all arrived to Colorado on different schedules, some as long as 20 years ago, some as recent as 5 years. They have since spread out across the front range, with members living in Fort Collins, Loveland, Denver, Berthoud, and Bellvue.

For having only been together a short time, Wood Belly has had some great gig opportunities come their way. The most memorable being a show at the beloved Mishawaka opening up for Billy Strings and Trout Steak Revival.

When asked what it is that attracts them to Bluegrass music they said "I think bluegrass music encompasses all the good qualities of other genres that we yearn for and provides a cohesive framework for performance that can be quite inviting. Each instrument has it's own purpose in the machine and can blend with the others to express a spectrum of emotions. While modern bluegrass may have departed from Bill Monroe's version, these days bluegrass can feature masterful shredding, profound songwriting, stacked harmony singing, and intricate compositions that pulse with life. That and drummers are too difficult to work with. "

Though they specialize in bluegrass, they draw influence from many genres, including jazz and blues. Some of their "grassier" influences include Tim O'Brien, Hot Rize, Blue Highway, Chattham County Line, and Del McCoury, just to name a few.

This October (2017), Wood Belly will be heading up to Swingfingers Studio to cut their debut album. They expect the full length to come out in the Spring of 2018, and they will hit the festival circuit to support the album.

"I think when it boils down to it, we want as many people to hear and be inspired by our music as possible and to grow as musicians and songwriters. We just want to thank the people who have supported us and keep us chugging away. It wouldn't be nearly as fun without you guys!
