Nelson Slater is best known for working with Lou Reed in the 70s, and if you are in Cincinnati he will tell you all about those times and when they were in college together; he will also tell you of all the various astral planes, metaphysical and 'pataphysical realities he operates and lives in.

Nelson Slater's only solo album Wild Angel will be remembered best as a companion to Lou Reed's mid-70s glam albums Coney Island Baby (RCA, 1975) and Rock and Roll Heart (Arista, 1976) because of Reed's involvement, lots of the same players, and a similar sound though better than either albums by Reed.

"Wild Angel" has the fervor of Reed's live performances that he removed from his own studio recordings. "Sad About It" owes as much to rambling performances by singer-songwriters like Neil Diamond as it does to Reed. "We" is memorable for Reed's vocals and "Complete the Story" for Reed playing it on tour in the 70s. What is most memorable about the album is that Nelson Slater got the best out of Lou Reed's mid-70s glam pop sound, and it is a shame that he never recorded anything else with Reed. And Mick Rock's S&M cover got voted as one of the 100 worst by VH1. --Andrew Stecz
